Lena Park, “Don’t imitate Americans”

In an interview with Joynews24, Korean-American Lena Park (Park Jung Hyun) expressed her optimism on Rain and Lim Jeong Hee’s debut in the US market.

“Asians in America are more perceived to have an intellectual image; the ones wearing glasses and are the engineers or doctors than singers. But recently, Asian entertainers like Daniel Dae Kim and Kim Yun Jin of ‘Lost’ are being recognized. Daniel Dae Kim is especially appealing to American women as a ‘Sexy Asian Guy,'” Lena Park explained.

Since Lena Park can somehow read the American market’s “code” because she was born in the US and lived there until she was 20, she was asked to give an advice to Asian singers aspiring to enter the US market.

“Rather than imitating Americans, Rain and Lim Jeong Hee should utilize their Asian personalities. Don’t try to change just to look American because that’s somewhat a taboo,” Lena Park advised.

On a different note, Lena Park also expressed how she loves being a singer during the interview.

“I want to forever do music. When I get married and even after having a child, I’d still want to continue singing,” Lena said.

  1. I agree with her. Let’s just hope the other Asian artists who are trying to make it big in the West heed her advice.

  2. I agree with her that they should be themselves but I don’t get what she means by it would be unacceptable for them to look American.

  3. In other words, she said that acting Americans is somewhat a taboo or prohibited. Sorry, if I’m not clear.

  4. No, you were clear. Don’t worry about it. It might be taboo to act American but they’re going to get laughed at if they’re fobbish.
